Our Mission and History
The mission of the American
Society of Women Accountants (ASWA) is "to
enable women in all accounting and related fields to achieve their
full personal, professional and economic potential and to contribute
to the future development of their profession."
ASWA was formed in 1938 to
increase the opportunities for women in all fields of accounting and
finance. The first chapter was chartered in Indianapolis,
Indiana. The Richmond, Virginia chapter was chartered in March,
1950.
ASWA has more than 100
chapters throughout the United States with approximately 6000
members. Membership has been open to men since 1974.
ASWA members work at all
levels of the accounting profession, from individual practitioners to
entry- and top-level positions in industry and government and from
juniors to partners in major accounting firms. Members include
partners in national, regional and local CPA firms, financial
officers, controllers, academicians, financial analysts and data
processing consultants, students and recent collage graduates, and
